Getting Started With Muscle Training

There are as many different opinions on the type of training schedule to follow when your goal is to build muscle. When it comes to body training and gym workouts, everyone has their personal preferences, and everyone it seems, has an opinion to share.

So Where To Start?

First of all you need a clear set of goals. Why are you training? Is it for a sport that requires muscle mass? A sport such as triathlon that requires muscle tone? Or just to get in shape for summer on the beach?

Your success is reliant on your personal commitment and belief. There is an abundance of information on getting started and how to correctly progress, but without a burning desire to succeed and a clear reason for putting in the effort, your sessions will be unmotivated and lack passion, ultimately setting yourself up for failure.

Prior to even talking to a personal trainer or signing up to the gym, sit down and ask yourself the following questions:

  • Why do I want to begin muscle training, what's my main goal?
  • Am I prepared to focus, commit to achieving success?

While the details and sequential recommendations for body building can differ, there are some fundamentals that apply to the process no matter what system or gym plan you're following.

  • How do I build muscle?
  • How do I strengthen muscle?
  • Am I healthy enough to begin a muscle building routine?
  • What should I be eating?
  • How often should I eat?
  • Should I be eating specific foods before and after my workout?
  • Should I eat at different intervals throughout the day?
  • Is there a specific diet for building muscle?
  • How many calories should I eat?
  • are supplements worth while?
  • Does alcohol affect my workout progress?

Getting enthusiastic about working out at the gym is all about lifestyle change, making wise decisions throughout your daily life to make your time at the gym as effective as possible, in the short and long term.

If you're getting into muscle training for the first time, you need to build a workout plan with a qualified personal trainer. Discuss with them your goals, whether you should be on a specific diet plan or just generally eating healthy, and have them walk you through each exercise, to show you exactly how you should be stretching and using each piece of gym equipment. Incorrect use of any piece of gym equipment can have disastrous consequences.
